How To Be Mindful With Your Skincare Routine
I’ve always found rejuvenation in alone time. There’s something about taking a moment for yourself that allows you to be more grateful and more present in your life. But, as I grow older and take on more responsibilities, I find self-care time is few and far between. For example, I used to take an hour-long bubble bath every Sunday evening. Now? I’m lucky if I get 10 minutes alone.
As priorities shift and life changes, we need to allow ourselves to be flexible in self-care space, too. I found this transition difficult at first; I wasn’t sure how I could replace my luxurious bubble bath. Until it dawned on me: taking care of your skin is self-care.
Do you take your makeup off every night? Do you cleanse and moisturize? All these moments can be done more slowly and you can learn to be present when caring for your skin.
A nighttime skincare routine is a great way to start being more mindful of how you care for your skin. Here are three ways to be more mindful and present in your skincare routine:
Know what ingredients you're putting on your skin
When’s the last time you read the ingredients label on your cleanser? Download the Environmental Working Group (EWG) app and search for your products to get a clear understanding of what, exactly, you’re putting on your skin. Since our skin is our largest organ, it makes sense to be mindful of what we’re putting on our skin and in our body.
The EWG app rates products on a scale of 1 to 7 based on the level of toxicity. These ratings are an overall product score based on allergy, cancer and developmental concerns from the ingredients. A safe zone for products is a 1 to 3 rating. Here are a few ingredients to avoid when being mindful of your products: fragrance, parabens, and oxybenzone.
Be mindful of clean skincare companies
Part of self-care is knowing where your money is going. It feels good to be mindful of your financial footprint. Make sure you're contributing to companies that align with your values and are putting your safety first. Unfortunately, too many companies in the cosmetic industry put profits above health, which means consumers have to take their skincare wellness into their own hands.
Clean skincare products allow getting the same results without harsh chemicals. Many companies don’t disclose every single ingredient in their products, so it’s important to be mindful of where you buy your products. A few companies I trust and love are Beautycounter, The Detox Market, and Herbivore Botanicals. There are so many more companies that opt out of toxic ingredients and put their customers’ safety first.
Make your nighttime skincare routine a meditation
Now for the fun part: making your routine a self-care moment. Light some candles or incense, put on a meditation soundtrack, a podcast or vibey music, bring a glass of water or chamomile tea, shut the door and breathe. Close your eyes and take a long, deep breath before starting your nighttime skincare routine.
Get mind into a kind and giving space so that you can enjoy and relish your skin without tugging harshly, pinching it or criticizing it. I mean, we all have that one pimple that just won’t go away! So, let’s move past that and focus on love and kindness. Slowly take off your makeup, then gently cleanse your face. Move onto your toner, serums, and moisturizer in the same manner.
If you’re strapped for time like I am, I promise this will change your life. You’ll feel like you’re going to the spa when in reality you’re just taking 10 to 15 minutes for yourself in your very own bathroom.
It’ll allow you to get a better night’s sleep, think more clearly and be more present throughout the week. I practice this mindful skincare routine every night before I doze off.
